Ministry Information

Stated Mission: The mission of the church is to know, love, and serve God in our worship, music, teaching, and fellowship and in caring for each other, our community, and the world.

We find our unity in Jesus Christ who is the head of the church. Our enlightenment and guidance come by the Holy Spirit through the Holy Scriptures which is our only rule of faith and practice in the church. We are guided by the standards set forth in the Apostles creed and the Nicene Creed. We respect and honor our historical roots, the United Methodist Church, the Reformed Church in America, and the Society of Friends (Quakers).

This mission is best achieved when faithful people guided by the Holy Spirit are chosen as officers of the church.

Specific ministry goals: Developed as a result of focus group meetings and "cottage" meetings of almost all of the active members.

• Recognize that worship and meaningful preaching are essential to leadership

• Increase the leadership in spiritual growth and community service to enrich our fellowship. Church as family is our strength.

• Set youth ministry as a high priority in supporting, growing and strengthening our church

• Continue to cherish our diversity as a tolerant, inclusive, multi-denominational church.

• Keep and grow music as an important ministry within our church

Leadership roles of women: Women fill all capacities of leadership within our church, without reservation.

What new program or expansion do you hope to provide w/in 5 year?
See our website for a summation of the "cottage" meetings and vision of the church. www.lyallmemorial.org

Also, given that the congregation has identified the development of a youth ministry as a priority in growing and strengthening our church, we plan to seek funding opportunities to establish such a program, or create a joint effort with other neighboring churches within the community.

Adult education program:
We gather in Christ's name so that - as a community - we can worship Him through prayer; Bible reading, study, and discussion; and sing hymns of praise. We are a small holistic group whose members encourage and support each other both inside of and outside of the meeting times The class is open to all adults, Christian or not. So far all have been Christians, but at varying stages from infancy/seeker to mature. Currently we have two 90-minute classes, both on Thursdays, so people can pick whichever one best fits their day's schedule. The class and discussion are led by a facilitator. We open with a hymn and prayer and close with prayer. Around 20 people - half from LMFC, half from other churches - attend. A donation is requested to cover the materials' costs.

Some of the courses (past, present, and future): video-assist: "That the World May Know" "Jesus of Nazareth"; a couple of Beth Moore series others - using Bible, study guides, and privately developed manual: Christ in Genesis, Apostles' Creed, Gospel of Mark, Romans, Daniel, Revelation, Letters of John, Heaven, Parables, Gospel of John (next year)

What makes your church uniquely attractive to people in your community? We are the only truly protestant church in 5+ mile radius by our inclusive, multi-denominational nature and welcoming reputation. Our music program is renowned.

Community involvement in past year:

• New Year’s Eve in Millbrook (serving 1500+ adults & children with arts)
• Food for Folk (community food bank for wider community)
• Gifts of Joys (packages to soldiers)
• Operation Christmas Child (shoeboxes to children around the world)
• Giving Tree (gifts to needy families for the holiday season)
• CareNet Baby Bottle Drive (funds for teen pregnancy mothers & babies)

Describe changes currently occurring in the community in which your congregation ministers, & identify ways God is acting among you to meet these new challenges?

• Food bank—increasing #s of needy families presents opportunity for more members of congregation to offer assistance in small ways through gifts of canned goods, etc., including the involvement of the children

• Healing program—this concerted offering of prayer for anyone in the community is relatively new to our church, and we have seen/experienced specific instances of God’s work in healing and wellness among those for whom prayers were offered

Which denominations are present within 3 miles? Protestant (LMFC), Roman Catholic & Episcopal

Outreach:

What percentage of people within one mile are unchurched? Unknown.

Our strategy is to advertise when our services are, what exciting programs we are offering (spiritual and community-based), and to continue to support community needs, with the expectation that good news may be enticing to someone who is searching.

The income level of the people in our congregation tends to be: about average for our community (meets the median)
