Pastor’s Letter

April 2008

Now that Easter is over we are living in the season of Pentecost, the fifty-day interval between the time of Jesus’ resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.  When politicians talk about “change,” they sound a bit like Christ saying, “Behold, I make all things new.  Of course one needs to take the poll’s affirmations with a bit less certainty than the Lord’s.  No matter, that old saying “tide and time wait for no man” seems accurate enough.  So long as Creation moves forward there will – inevitably – be change.

Now that time has come for change, change here at Lyall.  April 21st will be my final “official” day as pastor. The final total will be a bit more that 12 year, 7 months.  I like to think that during that time we have faithfully represented God’s will at work in our community.  Where we have failed, I ask forgiveness.  While I could list some of the things we have done/accomplished, I prefer to say/think that our most important work as been our work with teach other.  The body of Christ is necessarily comprised of many parts; what is necessary is the realization that no part can effectively function apart from any other.

Elizabeth and I are off to a different sort of ministry, one we have been brought to over the course of many years.  Together we anticipate new possibilities in ministry and a joy-filled witness to God at work.  And, when we move, the Federated Church will also move in a way made unique by God.

My grandmother had a cross stitch on the wall in her dining room on the farm.  It read:

Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing affright you,

All things are passing,

God never changes.

God bless you all,

Karl Esmark, Pastor

Annual Rummage Sale
By Katrina Wack

It's that time of year again. Time to clean out those closets, garages, basements, toy boxes and every other nook and cranny that tends to gather the detritus of our lives. FWSCS will be holding its annual Rummage Sale on May 2nd and 3rd this year.
Please gather your gently used clothing, household items, toys etc. and bring them to the church during the week of April 27th. Signs will direct you as to in which part of the church your items should be placed.
As always, we are also in need of volunteers to help set up tables and move furniture (most likely on the 27th after church). We also need sorters for the week of set up, as well as volunteers to work a shift or two during the day of the sale. If you would like to volunteer, contact one of the co-chairs, Betty Doyle or Christine Horihan.

     See you in the Spring!

Please note the following e-mail corrections in the updated Church Directory:

30-Hour Famine
By Mandy Elliott

Once again, the teens (6-12th grades) from Lyall, Grace Church, and friends will be fasting for 30 hours to raise awareness and funds for hungry children around the world. Funds raised will go to World Vision for programs that feed and care for children in many nations. The famine will be April 25-26, Friday-Saturday. Those participating should eat lunch on Friday and meet at the church at 5:30 pm Friday evening. We will stay at the church over night and break the fast at 6 pm on Saturday with a potluck dinner, which everyone is invited to join. Sixth graders and those with medical reasons may participate in a modified fast. Teens should see Mandy Elliott for a sponsor packet and more information. Adults are needed to help, especially men for the overnight. Everyone is encouraged to support the teens in this life-impacting event.

The FWSCS held its first meeting for 2008 on March 10. After a refreshing time of fellowship over goodies, we had a business meeting at which we discussed the program for the year and set our budget. We also discussed what to do with our "Praise God" money. Our annual rummage sale will be held on May 2nd & 3rd. Co-chairs are Betty Doyle and Christine Horihan.  Note this change:  *please NO MEDIA (books, CD’S, tapes, etc.).  Our next meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14th. Child care is provided.

F.W.S.C.S. Mini-Retreat
By Kathy King

On Sunday, March 16, we held our first mini-retreat of the year. A group of good girls got together to learn from the mistakes of "Eve: the First Bad Girl." We had a fun time of learning and fellowship. Kathy King facilitated the event. Our next mini-retreat is from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at which time we will learn from the mistakes of another bad girl of the Bible. Join us after church with a bag lunch (you provide) and/or join us for the retreat at 1:00 p.m. Child care is provided.

Save This Date - Sunday, April 20th

By Joyce Heaton

Our church will be hosting a Farewell Luncheon Reception in honor of Karl and Elizabeth Esmark on Sunday, April 20, 2008, from 11:45 AM to 2:00 PM, following our morning service. Our congregation, in addition to others within our community, is invited to attend.
Donations of food items would be welcomed. We're hoping to serve sliced, freshly roasted turkey breast and baked ham for small sandwiches, fruit platters, vegetable platters, cheese and crackers, and whatever other finger food you might like to bring. In lieu of a food donation, we are also accepting financial contributions towards paper goods and perishable items. Please sign up by completing the form in your weekly church bulletin, or by calling Joyce Heaton at 677-8167.
I'm sure we can all think of a special time, or way, in which Karl and Elizabeth affected our lives. Please feel free to share this with them by sending a letter, card, or note of thanks, which will be assembled in an album for them. If you'd like to participate, there will be an envelope in the mail pocket outside of Joyce Nielsen's office specifically for this purpose. Or, you may send it to the church as follows:
Attention: Joyce Nielsen,
Lyall Federated Church, PO Box 426, Millbrook, NY 12545.
Thank you.

 Coffee Hour - none scheduled

Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

You may have noticed that there are no Coffee Hours scheduled for April.  That’s because nobody volunteered to host one, and unfortunately, as I prepare the quarterly schedule, the same is true for May and June.
We all enjoy Coffee Hours, but few are willing to host them.  It’s not as daunting a task as it may seem.  A simply prepared Coffee Hour provides the same opportunity for fellowship as an elaborate one, and is equally appreciated by our congregation.
A Coffee Hour sign up sheet is posted across from the pastor’s office.  I urge individuals, families, and groups to help keep Coffee Hours happening frequently at our church, and I’d be happy to provide guidance and assistance to anyone who might be interested in helping out.

FWSCS News
By Kathy King

Our women’s society, the FWSCS, met on April 14th for an evening of fellowship, refreshment, and business.

We talked about the upcoming Rummage Sale on May 2nd and 3rd. Betty Doyle and Christine Horihan are co-chairing the event, and Kristen Reid is in charge of clean-up.  Anyone interested in helping out should contact one of these women.  A reminder: Please do NOT send in any media (books, tapes, DVDs, etc.)

We are hosting the annual Ecumenical Salad Supper this year on June 9th.  Gretchen Reed will join us with her phenomenal voice in praising the Lord. All women are invited to attend.  Look for more information in the June Newsletter.
We held a mini-retreat on April 27th.  Betty Doyle helped us learn about Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11), and we learned what not to do from yet another “Bad Woman of the Bible.”  These mini-retreats are one hour long, yet we women who participate come away satisfied and filled with God’s Word.  Join us for our next one on Sunday, May 18th, from
1-2 p.m.

Our next evening of fellowship and business is on Monday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.

Food for Folks
By Diane Moretti

Thank you to all of you who continue to donate to our food pantry. Through your generosity, we continue to help those in need throughout our community. I have posted a couple of “Thank You” notes from a few of the families that we helped during the holiday season. They are located very near the coffee hour sign up sheet on the bulletin board across from Karl's office. So, after reading the Thank You’s, PLEASE feel free to sign up to host a coffee hour. (You're welcome, Dawn!).
Pantry items that we could really use are: coffee,  cat or dog food, small boxes of sugar, baking items, cake mixes, frostings and powdered milk.  For those who buy at Stewarts, a great way to give milk is to donate a milk card fully stamped,
If you know of someone in need (may be too proud to ask) please let me know, all IS  kept confidential.

Library News
By Kathy King

Answers Magazine: Building a Biblical Worldview is a magazine which comes out quarterly.   Its aim is to help us understand our Creator and His world.  Sally O’Brien has been giving a gift subscription to the church for several years.  Come in and read some of the issues.  The March-June 2008 issue is all about the Tower of Babel “which is not some myth, but a real event in history that dramatically changed our world and explains many things that would otherwise be mysteries, such as our differences in language and skin tones” (Ken Ham).  Back issues cover such topics as astronomy (including a talk about the Big Bang), education / indoctrination, and Noah’s Flood.  Also, each issue has a section for kids.  The magazine is fascinating reading and proves over and over the reliability of God’s Holy Word.

Seed Money
By Kristen Reid

SEED MONEY: A fundraiser that grows on you.

The fundraising committee would like to describe one way we plan to raise money this year. We are calling the project SEED MONEY. We are planning to plant some seed money with each of the willing participants in hopes that it will grow over the summer and come September, we will reap the harvest. We have it from a good source that this is an excellent way to include the whole church body in the project.
It works similar to planning a garden.  First, you take the time to think and pray about how you could participate. We give you the seed ($). You plant, you weed, you pray for sunshine or rain. Then in September, you bring in the harvest.
The details for our part are already worked out. On May 4th, during our regular worship service, we will be passing out our SEED MONEY in plates (or baskets). We will pass these plates to every pew, so that each person (YOUNG & LESS YOUNG) may take from the plate the money they need for his/her project.
The details for your part will be varied and fun. If you plan to bake some goods for sale, you would take enough $ to buy your ingredients. If you (or a group of you) plan a car wash, you would take enough $ for soap. If you plan to provide a lawn mowing service, you would take money for the gas you’ll need. Or, you could literally plant some seeds, grow crops, sell them to friends and neighbors and bring in the profit.

Are you getting the idea? Then, you have the whole summer to make the time to follow
through on your idea. In the fall we will pass those same plates on September 14th and gather in the harvest.
For inspiration we look to the Parable of the Talents found in Mathew 25:14-28. The master gave a portion of his money to each of three servants. Each found a way to use those talents. I hope you pay particular attention to the first two servants, and not make the mistake of the third. My Bible noted that a talent was worth more than $1000. Our plan is to have $5, $10 and $20 bills so that you can take the amount you need. We will have special SEED ENVELOPES in which you can your money home and in which to return your harvested money in September. Let us each hear the words of our Lord “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
If you can not be in church either of the specified Sundays, please call Kristen Reid (677-5465), and we will work something out.

Baptisms

Baptized on March 15th, we welcome Timothy Ryan Simmons, Alison Leigh Simmons, and Justin Donald Simmons to the Family of Jesus Christ.  They are the children of Craig and Brenda Simmons.

Baptized on March 16th, we also welcome Lucia Elizabeth Curcio to the Family of Jesus Christ.  She is the daughter of Carlo and Taylor Curcio.

Also baptized on March 16th, we welcome Matthew Daniel Sparks to the Family of Jesus Christ.  He is the son of Daniel and Karen Sparks.

Baptized on April 6th, we welcome Wanda Swartz and her son, Andrew Louis Swartz, to the Family of Jesus Christ.

May the Lord’s blessings be upon them always.

LYALL CHURCH RUMMAGE HELPER
Submitted by Betty Doyle

I’m up to my eyebrows in rummage,
In castoffs & rejects & junk.
I’ve sorted six million girls’ blouses,
Forty-dozen old shoes and a trunk.

Men’s suits and shirts by the hundreds
I’ve piled in a pile on the floor,
And every time I go home,
I come back and find they’ve left more!

There’s old picture frames and a camera,
A white dishes set that looks great,
Motorcycle helmets, & bathrobes,
And 3 old prom gowns, size eight.

If you need any baskets or glassware,
Some yarn or a blanket or two,
Next week, (May 2-3) at Lyall, come buy it.
We’ll sell you a bargain, it’s true.

We’ve kids’ clothes & kids’ shoes & kids’ toys,
And puzzles with one thousands pieces,
And small knickknack vases and figures
Of kitties and birdies, and meeces.

I’ve spotted some rather nice loafers,
And a sweater that looks just my size.
There’s a mug I might get for my brother…
Since our prices are cheap, they’re good buys!

Yes I’m up to my eyebrows in rummage,
But you might see a gleam in my eye
As I think how to get past my husband
With the unneeded stuff I will buy.

>> Please come and bring your friends.  Remember all proceeds go to numerous charities and missions!

The Search for a Minister
By Jan Miller

We are still in the search for an Interim Minister and starting the advertising for a permanent one.  The task is a large one, and our committee is approaching it very carefully and thoroughly.

He Is God

He is the First and Last,
The Beginning and the End!
He is the keeper of Creation
and the Creator of all!
He is the Architect of the universe
and the Manager of all times.
He always was, He always is,
and He always will be…
Unmoved, Unchanged, Undefeated,
and never Undone!

He was bruised and brought healing!
He was pierced and eased pain!
He was persecuted and brought freedom!
He was dead and brought life!
He is risen and brings power!
He reigns and brings Peace!
The world can’t understand Him,
The armies can’t defeat Him,
The schools can’t explain Him,
Herod couldn’t kill Him, The Pharisees
couldn’t confuse Him, and The People
couldn’t hold Him!
